Closing our eyes

Recently, I had the privilege of teaching yoga to children at a school in Vancouver. During this experience, I discovered that for many of these children, the simple act of taking off their shoes, sitting down, closing their eyes, was an entirely new sensation. While some cultures incorporate this practice into their daily lives, for others, it may be unfamiliar territory. When questioned about the purpose of closing our eyes, I explained that just as we look at someone when we speak to them, when we seek to understand and communicate with ourselves, we must turn our gaze inward by closing our eyes. By closing our eyes, we create an opportunity to be fully present with ourselves, to reflect, and to gain a deeper understanding of who we are. This practice allows us to find inner peace and happiness within ourselves and is the start of meditation.
